They mainly feed on seeds, with insects such as beetles or grasshoppers making up a small percentage of their diet. Female cowbirds eat snail shells and eggs from visited nests for calcium.

They are primarily found in grassy areas with few trees and residential areas.

The brown-headed cowbird is found across the eastern and Midwest United States throughout the year, then migrated north for the summer.
